The Crusades were religious wars sanctioned by the Papacy participation in which came with religious rewards, such as forgiveness of sins. While the most famous ones were for the recovery or defense of the Holy Land, they could also be launched in other borders of Western Christendom and even within it against internal political/heretical opponents.
