Also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, this deck focuses on the period from the 10th century to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This period covers the reign of Basil II, when Norsemen such as Harald Hardrada served as Varangian Guards within the Empire, and extends to the Ottoman invasions during the reign of Constantine XI, the Empire’s final emperor.

They are harder to deploy because of their cost, but they can accomplish a great deal thanks to their durability. The focus for the Ottoman Empire is on its rise from the 14th century through the reign of Sultan Mehmed II. Emerging as a dominant power, the Ottomans expanded rapidly from Anatolia into Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. A key factor in their success was their adaptability, as they quickly adopted new tactics, recruited skilled individuals, and refined their military strategies. This was especially evident in their use of gunpowder, as they gathered engineers from across Europe and the Islamic world to develop massive siege cannons.

The Ottomans have powerful gunpowder units that are perfect for swiftly dismantling enemy fortifications, but these units require solid protection to be effective. To achieve this, you will need to use your swift cavalry units or well-trained Janissary infantry to keep the enemy at a distance while you slowly bring your gunpowder units forward.
